Inspiration from Tom Thomson

Which Ontarian’s has not heard of Tom Thomson. Tom Thomson (August 5, 1877 – July 8, 1917) was an influential Canadian artist of the early 20th century who directly influenced a group of Canadian painters that would come to be known as the Group of Seven.

Probably about 20 years ago, I purchased a book entitled “Tom Thomson – The Silence and the Storm” and visited the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg, Ontario which houses many of Tom Thomson’s paintings. From then, my love and curiosity of the Algonquin and Killarney park grew.

I admire Tom Thomson's appreciation for rugged, unkempt natural scenery, and his use of broad brush strokes and a liberal application of paint to capture the stark beauty and vibrant colour of the Ontario landscape.

One of my favourite paintings of his is called “Jack Pine” .

Here is a short video about it. However, the journalist incorrectly states that he was part of the group of seven. The Group of Seven was inspired by his work but was founded after Thomson's death.
