Autumn Inspiration

Have you ever scrolled through your photographs or paintings online and noticed a color pattern as the year goes on? Usually our winter artwork is full of black, white, and grey, shifting towards blue and green through the warmer months. Now, the time has come to capture and create the warm reds, oranges, and yellows of the fall. But changing leaves aren’t the only source of inspiration to be found.

Below are two ways this season can bring inspiration to artwork or your photography.

Lighting
The fall season brings a natural light that just can’t be found during any other time of the year. The “golden hour” (shortly before sunrise or after sunset) occurs at the most opportune times of day at this point in the year, it is not too early or too late. And with it, come warmer tones of color.

Weather
With dropping temperatures and looming snowfalls, autumn is one of the best times for capturing weather. Rain is inevitable, and can make for some creative dark and wistful imagery. If you’d rather stay inside, rainy days can make for great creative days if you’ve been wanting to set up with a coffee or tea and your instrument of choice. Fog and steam are also common, as the air cools but the sun is still warm, you’ll see fog across lakes and fields and on early morning streets.

This past week, I am continuing my experiments with warm and cool colours. Here is one with fall colours. This morning I'm experimenting with a similar approach with water. Who knows if I can apply the same principles and make it work.

I'm particularly fond of the sky in this painting which will be available at the St Marks Craft Fair next weekend (1040 Dozois Road, Manotick, ON K4M 1M2). The mountains are inspired by the High Peaks in the Adirondacks, NY.

I've also been painting some holiday theme watercolours. Stay tuned.

Did you know that you can subscribe to this blog and receive it in your mail every weekend (see right hand side of screen)?
