Supporting local businesses

Small local businesses play an important role in any society. Those businesses that survive over time provide economic stability for owners and their families. Small businesses that create jobs for workers, in addition to the owner, offer economic stability.

Whether it’s pride, duty or genuine support, knowing our dollar has gone to not only a community member, but a business owner we know and trust makes every purchase that much more special.

It really is pretty simple. When you support a local business you are supporting your local economy. Money you spend in a local business goes back into your local economy rather than into someone else's. It contributes to building up the areas where you live, where you eat and where you sleep and it does more to ensure a strong economic future for our families than buying from other countries just to save a few dollars.

Some local businesses are suffering as trends move towards e-commerce and as chain stores become more prevalent. That's not to say that e-commerce is a bad thing, it is just that the ease of shopping can often encourage us to ignore local businesses. I admit to being guilty of this.  Although there is nothing wrong with e-commerce,
it's important that we make sure we support our local businesses as well.

In recent weeks, one local art supply company called Wallack's has had to close three of its stores. Owners are working at changing the face of their three remaining stores (Downtown Ottawa, Gatineau and Nepean) to increase their service and viability.   I'm sad by the fact that the store closest to where I live closed 2 weeks ago.

Recently, I shared with you a blue orchid.  Today, here is a single strand of hanging purple Phalaenopsis Orchid.

This weekend, I feel like painting a couple of sugar shacks since I love maple taffy and it is the season for it.

Have a great week,
Danielle
