Colouring books trend

How much do you know about adult colouring books?

Apparently, they have been around for a long time. The recent increase in this trend seems to have been fuelled to some degree by social media—colourists posting their creations on Facebook and Pinterest. On these sites, colourist gather information on types of crayons versus gel pens, or how to make that tricky flower in the corner pop. Then they share their efforts.

In addition, the marketers of colouring books are advocating that theses books have therapeutic benefits to reduce anxiety- and stress-reduction. Colouring might help to release tension, but it’s a fundamentally more directed and restrictive activity than painting something from scratch.

The popularity of colouring books for adults doesn't seem to be going away. I was sure this would be a passing fad, but it looks like I'm wrong.  Did you know that Amazon even has a category for colouring books?

In any event, I'm certainly not about to set aside my watercolours for colouring books.

Last year, I attended the Ottawa Orchid show. Each Spring, members of the Ottawa Orchid Society, visiting societies and participating vendors present magnificent displays of their prized orchid plants for viewing by the general public and for judging. Last year, I was so impressed by the variety of orchids that people grow and took hundreds of photos. Here is a watercolour of one of those orchids that I painted last weekend. This one is part of lady slipper family - Orchid-Phragmipedium-longiflorium.

This year's orchid show will be held on Saturday, April 16 and Sunday, April 17, 2016 at the RA Centre at 2451 Riverside Drive.

Happy Valentine and have a great week,
Danielle
