The secrets that old recipe books hold

This is a busy weekend as I'm attending a 2-day workshop with Lian Quan Zhen, a famous american watercolorist, hence this blog is very short. If you are interested in reading more about the workshop I'm attending, you can read my other blog: http://arttutormembers.blogspot.ca/2016/08/workshop-with-lian-quan-zhen.html

Most of you probably remember your grandmother's or mother's recipe books and the small notes in the margins or loosed papers with additional family secrets.  Not only may you remember those recipe books, you may recall the little cardboard box with hand-written cards with recipes passed on from relatives or friends.  It was easy to spot the best recipes because they were on the pages and cards that had the greatest amount of stains. What will become of all of these things as more and more people rely on the internet for recipes?

These heritage recipes are our links with our past and our connections to special people and special events. We should preserve the memories and old recipes.

As my interest for vintage things grow, I thought a painting of recipe books might be different.  Since most nationalities have recipe books, this watercolour illustrates books from various cultures.

This painting gave me the opportunity to try out two new tubes of paint, one gold and one old bronze. Some of the lettering on the books were painted using those two colours.

Have a great week,
Danielle
