Trying new approach during workshop

Last weekend I was in a workshop where Lian Quan Zhen taught participants a different approach to painting with watercolours. The layering up of the background was very interesting. First Lian Quan Zhen taught us how to splatter the paint on the paper using only three colours. To mix the paint, we used our fingers, brushes, and straws. This was a very different experience.

He made everything look easy. Splattering the colours where you wanted them to go will require a lot more practice.  I had to wipe the floor after I was done. It's important to visualize the painting and anticipate where you are going to want to have certain colours and then mix them in a way that will serve you well later in the painting process.

Workshops like this are not confidence builders. Learning something new is always a bit de-stabilizing as one becomes more familiar with a new technique. The key point is not to give up and continue practicing the new technique and keep the portions that serve us well.  Otherwise, what's the sense of going to a workshop?

Here is my painting from last weekend's workshop.  The entire painting used only three colours
