How does a self-learner learn how to paint with watercolours

I’ve always been attracted to art and often visit galleries. The paintings in my home are all originals.

One day, I decided to take up watercolouring. Why watercolours over other medium, since I didn’t own any watercolours, well that’s a story for another day.

Are you wondering what I did to learn this medium which is known to be difficult?

For a good part of our life, education is mostly theoretical. We learn things in class rooms, we are tested on it and then we forget much of it, or at least the details.

Art requires a different type of learning. When you paint it doesn’t matter how much you know, it’s what ends up on paper or canvas that matters. In painting, one’s grasp and applications of principles is what matters. There is no shortage of supply of information on these principles.

We are fortunate that we live in times when there are countless resources out there to teach us things, including watercolouring. Today, we have access to more books than we could ever read, YouTube has numerous videos on a large variety of topics, DVDs by many different artists for any level abound on the web, and then there are online communities (e.g. ArtTutor) with lessons and feedback. These opportunities not only offer assistance on how to handle watercolours, they also provide key information on composition, perspective, form, color, design, value, etc. I have used all these opportunities, except classroom teaching, that are at our disposition to advance this new skill which I continue to improve and grow.
