Cumberland De Groot Barn

A few kilometers from where I live is the Cumberland Heritage Village Museum. This museum illustrates life in the 1920s and '30s with dozens of heritage buildings, including a working sawmill and blacksmith forge.  The Museum offers a unique experience that encourages you to play in the past and make memories for the future.  On the many buildings is the De Groot barn that was built around 1900 and relocated to the museum site in 1989.

Rustic barns are charming and make interesting subjects to paint.  Here is my painting of the local De Groot barn. I took the barn out of its current context and created a different environment for it.  Although I started this idea with the barn, the real focus is the old rusted tractor in the abandoned field of wild flowers.

Some people have claimed that paintings of barns are boring. I think they make for interesting topics when you play with different views, shadows, texture and colours.  In any event, Barns are the essence of the countryside and have an inviting look to them. They often tell stories of years of hard work and long hours. Therefore, I will continue painting them.

Have a great week
Danielle
