Uniqueness

Each artist, regardless of their level as an artist, sees themselves as an independent artist. Instinctively, we want to be unique and want to develop our own style.

However, artists are also curious about what their artist colleagues are producing. There is no clearer evidence of this than the multiple Facebook groups that exists and the thousands of artists that belong to these groups to see and learn from each other.

What will happen to individual artistic styles as it is more difficult to shield a unique style. Will the artist profession resemble what’s happening to big chain stores where they all look the same and the clothes are all within a narrow range of style? Will artists lose their uniqueness?
With increased sharing of art on social media, is developing a unique style an uphill battle?

This quote by Antoni Tapies relates to this topic: My wish is that we might progressively lose our confidence in what we think we believe and the things we consider stable and secure, in order to remind ourselves of the infinite number of things still waiting to be discovered.

Here is a recent painting of mine. It will be on exhibit at the Mosaic Juried show from February 8th to March 13th at the Shenkman Arts Center in Ottawa.
Danielle Beaulieu watercolour of old watches - uniqueness
Some people paint not for the uniqueness but for the pleasure of painting itself which is a great activity.

Have a great week,

Danielle
