Taking Risks

Taking risks is scary.

Have you considered painting something different and thought you might fall flat on your face with it?  To succeed in painting something different we have to take chances. There is no other way of getting ahead as an artist unless we are willing to take risks.

When faced with something different we must keep things in perspective. Many people tend to overestimate how big the risk is and its consequences. It all boils down to that fight or flight reflex embedded deep in our DNA.

What do we have to lose by taking a risk. If the painting doesn't work out. So what? You don't have to show it to anyone unless you really want to. If you're a watercolorist, you'll have lost a piece a paper and a bit of paint. No big deal.

Instead of focusing on what could wrong and letting your imagination run wild, think of all of the learnings you will have. The odds are that many things will turn out better than you expect.

In the past week, I finally decided to paint a fancy lamp post that I saw in Paris months ago and needed to simplify it.  This simplification was meant to focus on the mood in the painting.  This felt like a risk as there was very little use of the photo I was starting with and didn't have a reference for the rest.
