What if social media didn't exist

Have you ever wondered what would happen if social media didn't exist and artists weren't exposed to other artists works on a daily basis? What would our paintings look like? Are we being limited by what we're exposed to? Would Picasso have created cubism if he was on social media each day being bombarded with other styles?

In the days before social media, people would see other artworks in magazines, exhibits or museums. But now, that’s what Facebook and Instagram are for. It would not be a surprise if our choices of subjects and styles are now heavily influenced by what we see on social media. Especially when you consider the algorithm that shows you more of the stuff that you "like".

A 2020 study published in the journal Smart Learning Environments found that when social media was used for collaborative learning, it had a significant positive impact on how students interact with peers and teachers and, in turn, on their academic performance. “Use of online social media for collaborative learning facilitates students to be more creative, dynamic, and research-oriented,” the authors of the study wrote. “It is purely a domain of knowledge.”

Here is my latest painting. It was a demo from my "rusted lock" class.

And Behind this Door

I also have three paintings on the go for my upcoming exhibit in Galerie Old Chelsea at the end of April.  Here is one of those painting. This one will be 24"X20" once completed and if it turns out.

There are still a few spots left for my upcoming class to paint old barns.  This 6-week online class will help participants grow by having them decide on the barn, foreground and background and learn to pull it all together in a painting.  Participants are also more than welcome to paint the same subjects as me.

I'm hoping that by next week, I will finish some of my new paintings.

Have a great week
Danielle
